Nama-nama pemain yang bakal menjadi calon pemain Terbaik Dunia 2018 resmi diumumkan FIFA, Selasa (24/7/2018). Kalau biasanya ada 23 pemain yang masuk daftar kandidat, untuk tahun ini cuma ada 10 pemain.
Penentuan 10 pemain yang masuk daftar kandidat Pemain Terbaik Dunia 2018 dilakukan oleh para mantan pesepakbola top seperti Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima, Didier Drogba, Kaka, Frank Lampard, Alessandro Nesta, dan lain-lain.
Penilaian dilakukan berdasarkan performa masing-masing pemain pada periode 3 Juli 2017-15 Juli 2018.
Tetapi yang mengejutkan, FIFA tak memasukkan nama Neymar ke dalam daftar nominasi. Pemain termahal yang dibeli Paris Saint Germain itu tak tampak dalam daftar nominasi yang dirilis. Padahal rekannya di Paris Saint Germain, Kylian Mbappe masuk dalam nominasi.
Selain pemain, FIFA juga mengumumkan nominasi untuk penghargaan Pelatih Terbaik Tahun ini dengan nama-nama seperti Zinedine Zidane, Pep Guardiola, dan Gareth Southgate.
